Front Range Seed Analysts Meeting Minutes
April 8, 1999

The April 8, 1999 FRSA meeting was held at the National Seed Storage Laboratory in Fort Collins, Colorado.

Individuals present at the meeting were Richard Agnew, Carri-Ann Bard, Mike Bricker, James Bruce, Pat Conine, Mike Dideriksen, Joseph Guante Jr., Arnold L. Larsen, Mary McMahan, Marilyn Milhous, Annette Miller, Gil Waibel, and Loren Wiesner.  Companies and/or Organizations represented at the meeting were Arkansas Valley Seed Company, Colorado Seed Growers Association, Colorado Seed Laboratory, Hilleshog, National Seed Storage Laboratory, and STA Laboratories.

The meeting was called to order by President Annette Miller at 1:20 PM.  The minutes of the January 21, meeting were approved.  The minutes of the January meeting have been logged onto the FRSA web site, www.frsa.org.  Mike Bricker, Secretary, reported on 1999 FRSA membership and sponsorship.  As of April 8, individual membership stands at 9, supporters at 12, and sponsors at 10.  The Treasurer’s Report was presented by Pat Conine, and found to be in good standing.  An Audit Committee of Annette Miller and Gil Waibel was established which will review the bookkeeping for the past 12 months and report at the July 1 meeting.  Annette Miller gave an overview of the FRSA web site, noting that general updates of memberships, supporters, and sponsors has been the main emphasis.  Annette asked for suggestions for the web site and articles.  Jim Bruce plans an article for the web site for the near future.  Suggestions can be E-mailed to Annette at almiller@lamar.colostate.edu .

The July FRSA meeting date has been changed to Thursday, July 1, 1999.  The meeting will be held at Precision Seed Testing at Applewood Seed Company, 5310 Vivian Street, Arvada, Colorado.  Host for the meeting will be Jane Hall (303)431-7333.  At 1:00 PM MST there will be a tour of the Applewood wildflower trial gardens located on the premises. The meeting will begin shortly after the trial garden tour (estimate 1:45 / 2:00 PM).  The agenda for the meeting will be an Seed Analysts Forum for anyone wishing to attend.  Topics of interest will be sugarbeet chemical damage-substrate dependent demo by Mike Dideriksen, split coleoptile of corn demo by Loren Wiesner, and interpretation problems with pelleted Linaria demo by Barbara Atkins.  Individuals attending the meeting are encouraged to bring samples of unidentified seeds.   Two additional topics that may be presented are slides of quackgrass that display caryopses 1/3 length of palea, and sagebrush TZ testing and purity problems.

New Business
Loren Wiesner reported on the upcoming two five-day seed workshops to be held at the National Seed Storage Laboratory from July 12-23.  The first workshop will be “Seed Identification and Purity Analysis” held from July 12-16.  The second workshop will be “Seed Viability” held from July 19-23.  For information on the workshops access Seed Analyst Workshops.  Jim Bruce requests that should anyone have low germination, problem samples, and /or high dormancy seed samples that may be available, please send an E-mail to Jim at jimbruce@lamar.colostate.edu .  The samples will be used at the workshops.  A suggestion was made and a motion passed for FRSA to sponsor a boxed lunch at both the workshops.  Specifics on the boxed lunches will be determined at the July 1, meeting.

 The meeting concluded with the annual review of the AOSA 1999 rule proposals.  A report on the review is to be sent to the AOSA Rules Committee.  Access Summary of and Comments on the 1999 AOSA Rule Proposals as reviewed by Front Range Seed Analysts members on April 8, 1999 on the FRSA web site for the review.

There being no additional business, the meeting adjourned at 3:05 PM.
